Why use natural hair care products?

Studies show hair products contain several endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are associated with adverse health outcomes. Fake fragrances, preservatives, and synthetic ingredients are the main cause of damage to the endocrine system. In addition to potentially harming your body, mass produced hair care products often upset your hair’s natural balance, creating the need for more products to combat issues created by the previous product.

What is your endocrine system?

The endocrine system, made up of all the body's different hormones, regulates all biological processes in the body from conception through adulthood and into old age, including the development of the brain and nervous system, the growth and function of the reproductive system, as well as the metabolism and blood sugar levels. The female ovaries, male testes, and pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands are major components of the endocrine system. (source: https://www.epa.gov/endocrine-disruption/what-endocrine-system

So let’s ditch the chemicals and learn about how to care for your hair, naturally.

It can be a struggle to find a basic shampoo and conditioner that is free of harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances. With Rooted Apothecary’s shampoo and conditioner you don’t have to worry about gross ingredients AND you get to create your own scent with essential oils.

The shampoo is gentle and mild with no sulfates or alcohol. It provides a rich and creamy, sudsy application, leaving your scalp and hair feeling extra loved.

The conditioner is gentle enough to use daily with its organic oils and naturally derived ingredients. It is loaded with ingredients that will leave your hair looking and feeling soft, with a healthy dose of volume.

Natural Hair Care Routine:

Creating your own natural hair care routine can be a relaxing self care ritual. Use the elements of washing, conditioning, detangling, drying, and nourishing your hair to create your own custom routine that suites your hair type and lifestyle.

Washing your hair

  • Ideally you want to wash your hair less often than you currently do. Try to save shampooing and conditioning for no more than 3 times a week. In between, you can use dry shampoo to absorb oils and freshen your hair . Hot tip— after sprinkling Fresh Pow Dry Shampoo onto your scalp, massage in, brush from root to tip, and then blow dry! By running the blow dryer along your scalp you are creating volume and dispersing the oils.

  • Hair Spritz can also be used to freshen your hair between washes, and as a style aid to help tame flyaways and give bounce back to curls.

How to use hair oil

Once a week, use a high quality hair oil, like Mountain Maine Hair Serum. Perfect for curls, revitalizing colored or bleached hair, and to encourage hair growth on any part of the body. Depending on your hair type and natural oil level, you may want to massage into your scalp and leave for a few hours or overnight before washing your hair. It can also be used on just the tips to treat split ends. Use as a styling aid, glossing it through your hair to retain and replenish style after using heating tools. A little goes a long way, so use sparingly daily.

When using Mountain Mane as a scalp treatment make sure to indulge in self massage on your scalp. Scalp massage stimulates the skin, promoting blood flow and allowing the serum to make its way into your hair follicles.

How to use a hair tisane to strengthen and nourish the hair from the inside out and outside in

Weekly or monthly, you can add the Mountain Mane Hair Tisane to your routine for a real ritual treat. Start by drinking this tea daily to strengthen hair and encourage growth. Take the time at least once a week to bring a cup into the shower or bath with you, and pour the tea over your hair as a final nourishing rinse. Wring hair out, and proceed with your herbal hair day.

What is the best way to detangle hair?

If your hair is prone to tangles, be sure to brush your hair well before you shampoo and use a quality natural conditioner. Before you rinse your conditioner, use a brush or comb IN THE SHOWER to detangle, then rinse gently. We have eco-friendly brushes at Rooted that are made from real boar hair, rubber, and bamboo, available in stores only.

Preventing Breakage

  • If you need to dry your hair, especially if you have curls or wavy hair, skip the big heavy towel and opt for an old t-shirt instead.

  • At night, consider switching to a silk pillowcase to ease breakage during sleep.

Most importantly, choose products that nourish.

Creating your own hair care products at home is a great way to ensure only the best ingredients are being used.

Natural Hair Care FAQ:

  • How to help split ends, dry tips, but oily roots?

Oil your tips! After showering, with or without shampoo— preferably a rinse without will do. You can use a small amount of Mountain Mane Hair Serum to rub into just your tips. Try using a dry shampoo like our Fresh Pow in the oily spots at the roots. Give your hair a wash 1-3 times a week with our all naturally derived Shampoo and use our Conditioner as a deep treatment—leaving it on for at least 5 minutes before rinsing—focusing the conditioner at the roots and not the scalp.

  • How to help a dry/itchy scalp but oily roots and split ends?

First question back is: what type of shampoo are you using, and how many times a week are you washing? Over washing with drug store brand shampoos that are super sudsy can be hugely drying to our skin. To get hair and scalp back on track it can be nice to do overnight hair oil treatments, working our Mountain Mane Hair Serum into the scalp and roots, and sleeping with it in, or having it in all day. Wash it out in the shower with our naturally derived Shampoo, followed with a long conditioning treatment using our Conditioner 2-3 times a week. Keep washing with shampoo to a minimum, instead using Fresh Pow dry shampoo for the oiliness at roots during the day.

  • What to do for hair that is very dry?

Get in the habit of using hair oil like our Mountain Mane Hair Serum after getting out of the shower with wet hair. Work in a small amount from tips up. Limit hair washes to 3 times a week if doing it every day, and do a deep condition, leaving in Conditioner for at least 5 minutes while in the shower or bath.

  • How to lock moisture into hair without causing greasiness

Try incorporating hair rinses and drinking nourishing tea like our Mountain Mane Hair Tisane. Drinking the tea helps to bring hydration to the entire system from the inside out. You can make a cup of tea, drink half, and pour half on your hair as a final rinse after shampooing and conditioning, or as your only treatment to your hair while getting it wet. If you need to lock in extra moisture, just add a little Mountain Mane Hair Serum to the ends of your tips, not the entire length of hair.

  • What to do when hair seems healthy, but the scalp is dry?

Lessens shampoos each week, also start to drink the Mountain Mane Tisane and using it as a finishing rinse to your hair when you do wash. Incorporate more fats into the diet. Fish oil supplements could be a good place to start, as well as eating more animal fats, or fatty fruits and veggies like avocados or olives. You could also do a scalp treatment 1-3 times a week with the Mountain Mane Hair Serum to get the scalp back to a moisturized state. Over-shampooing can wipe away all the good oils our body makes and that we need for proper hair nourishment!
