DAYS: Friday 3PM- 6PM + Saturday 9AM-12PM

DESCRIPTION: This is a hands-on working apprenticeship. It can be suited for any age or level of experience, from want-to-be foragers or the novice herbalist that would love to get their hands into concocting and blending wild plant matter for medicinal or culinary uses. We will be learning to identify local plants, as well as lessons on how to incorporate them into your lifestyle. Learn to safety incorporate wild edible plants into diet and how to make herbal medicines and skin-care remedies. 

We will be making items that are sold at the Crested Butte Farmers market, my online store or retailers. Learn the craft, from a small, hand batched company that has established and loved products. 

Cheap accommodations are available as well as free camping, more information provided upon request.

  COST: Each weekend is $60.

 

·      Choose up to 5 weekends throughout the summer to work in the apothecary making herbal remedies and studying medicinal plants in the wilds of the Rockies.

·      Spend Friday afternoon outdoors, learning plants by common and Latin names, their medicinal or edible uses and ways to make use of them.

·      Saturday morning will be spent in the apothecary preparing herbal remedies and product blending of the plants we learned the day before.

·      Work-trade option available for half-priced weekend, pay $30 and stay to work Sundays Farmers Market in Crested Butte 9AM-2PM, limited availability. Free accommodations available for both nights.

Week 1     June 2 - 3   WILDCRAFTING FOR THE MANE + MORE

This class is great for the first time herbal student. We will get aquatinted with stinging nettle, horsetail, violet, mountain bluebells and elderflowers. Learn ideas for using these plants as food, medicine and for skincare products will be discussed, demonstrated, tasted and created. 

 Create plant extractions in oils, vinegars, and witch hazel. Get a knack for combining herbs for teas and rinses. We will be making all or a few of the following products:

  • Mountain Mane Hair Tisane and Insane in the Face Tisane
  • Create oil infusions for Mountain Mane Hair Serum 
  • Mountain Mane Vinegar Rinse
  • Infused herbs in witch hazel

 

Week 2     June 30 - July 1   SENSING AROMATICS

Get familiar with rose, wild mint, piñon, lavender, and cottonwood in this highly scented class. Ideas for using these plants as food, medicine and for skincare products will be discussed, demonstrated, tasted and created. 

In this session we will explore wildcrafted resins and aromatics for creams, dram scents, hydrosols, face tonifying spritz and lip balms. We will be making all or a few of the following products:

  • Rose + Piñon Face Cream
  • Cottonwood Bliss Butter
  • Wild Mo'Mint Lip Balm, Opiñonated Lip Balm, or Bella Bitch Balm
  • Elderflower Lavender Cardamom Face Spritz
  • Rose or Lavender Hydrosols

 

Week 3 July 7 - 8   OILS + TOILS

Highlighting herbs are yarrow, sweet clover, Arnica, Pedicularis, and Artemesia's. This 'all about oils' class will teach you different ways to use herbs for self care.

Be enthralled with Infusing medicinal oils and take a sneak peak into essential oil distilling. Learn to use oils for different applications such as massage, cough rubs, ear infections, and anti-itch oils. Get a knack for combining herbs for teas and rinses. We will be making all or a few of the following products:

  • Ditch the Itch Anti-itch serum
  • Massage Oil Blends
  • Cough Rub
  • Ear Oil
  • Dram Scents
  • Bath Herb/Salt Blends

 

Week 4 Aug. 11 - 12   SALVES, SERUMS + SPRAYS

Take a stroll around Gunnison for a guide to urban foraging, identify hops, common mallow, gumweed, goldenrod, purslane and more. 

Find  your method for building formulas to treat topical skin conditions using oils, toners and liniments. Learn recipes for bugs sprays, room freshening spray and salves.  Get a knack for combining herbs for teas and rinses. We will be making all or a few of the following products:

  • Spritz's- Wildcrafted Big Spray, Smudge Sprays and Toners
  • Alpenglow Face Serum
  • Salves- All Ease, Adrenaline Junkie and Anti-fungal
  • Hydrosols
  • Extracting herbs in alcohol 

 

Week 5 September 22 - 23     MAKING MEDICINAL MENSTRUUMS

Take a drive over Kebler pass through one of the oldest aspen groves, meet osha, sweet root, scrub oaks and hawthorns. 

Create herbal formulas with the use of alcohol, glycerine, honey, and water extractions. Learn to concoct tinctures, syrups and elixirs with an understanding on how to use them.
